The value of education - Fernando Savater

The well educated

knows that is never completely but it is enough to want to be pregnant
more. Fernando Savater

Education is a topic with many facets, from which can be addressed and immerse themselves in considerable complexity. In the book entitled The value of education , Fernando Savater , with his characteristic lucidity, does break down the topic from the role of educated people, mainly teachers and parents.

The book consists of six chapters, of which I want to highlight some ideas that show what's going on each:

1. Human learning

The fact teach our peers and to learn from our peers is more important for the establishment of our humanity than any specific knowledge that this would perpetuate or transmit.

2. The content of teaching

... education, geared to the formation of the soul and culture respectful of moral and patriotic values, has always been considered of higher rank than the statement, which discloses technical skills or theories scientific.

3. The eclipse of the family

The role of family in education a person is irreplaceable, and therefore "the less parents want to be parents, more paternalistic claimed that the state" , and therefore gives the possibility of guiding the destiny of a person, more crowded than may be.

In today's society the role of the father is of vital importance required to have "sufficient authority to manage the fear of initiation in which case the reality principle, but also with the tender care home, next, selfless, centuries has characterized the family role of mother "

4. The discipline of freedom

The objective explicit teaching of modernity is to truly free people ... understand that the freedom we are talking about is not an a priori ontology of the human condition, but an achievement of our social integration.

5. Towards a human without humanity?

Humanistic education is primarily to promote and illustrate the use of reason, noting that capacity, abstracted, clear, logical argument and concluded ... create a sense of respect for the capabilities of man and mankind as a species.

Living in a pluralistic society requires to assume that they are quite respectable people, not their opinions, and the right to own opinion is that it heard and discussed, not being seen to move without touching it if it were a sacred cow.

6. Educating is universal ...

social desirability of forming autonomous individuals capable of participating in communities that know no denying transform themselves, to open and widen without dying, which cover more than common human helplessness that intriguing diversity of forms of live or commodified trappings that mask. People so convinced that the principal asset we produce and increase the shared humanity, similar in essence in spite of the tribes and privileges that we humans also identified.

A highly recommended book for those interested in the topic of education or who are somehow involved in training others, especially those who are parents or teachers. Reflect on subjectivity with which we have been educated and certainly educate on how to properly focus our efforts to educate others, humbly appreciate what we have and what we are.

I thank my good friend Juan Carlos the extraordinary recommendation.
